Design and Layout of Your Book

Cover Layout For Perfect Bound Books

Properly created files will have all fonts and images embedded and will retain all original formatting.

  • We recommend you keep all your copy (title, author name, book description, bio, barcodes, etc.) and primary images (cover image, author photo, etc.) at least ¼" from the trim line.
  • You should allow at least ¼" bleed outside the actual trim lines of the book to ensure there is proper coverage of colour to trim the book.
  • Ensure cover images and graphics are 300 dpi. Resize the image if necessary to the exact size you are using on the cover.
  • Maintain consistency in the use of fonts for the cover and text.

Book Interior Pages Layout

Properly created files will have all fonts and images embedded and will retain all original formatting, pagination and other style elements.

  • Send only one Text/Book Block file for each title unless you are submitting colour inserts.
  • Keep all text and graphics at least a ¼" inside the trim margins. We accept no responsibility for any text or graphics within the ¼" of the trim margins.
  • All images should be 300 dpi and flattened in your native file before you embed them into your PDF file.
  • All images should be sized at 100% before inserted into the text.
  • All fonts and images must be embedded in your PDF file.
  • Be sure odd numbered pages are right facing pages, and even numbered pages are left facing pages.
  • The single text PDF should be created one-up, meaning one page at a time.
  • Do not include crop marks on your interior pages unless there are design elements that include bleed.

How To Calculate Your Spine Width

We have provided a handy link to help you calculate the spine requirements for your book. Simply enter the number of pages and use the calculate! button to determine the width in inches necessary.

Please remember that the total number of pages used in the calculation of your final PDF file must include all blank pages.

As each book is bound individually, when the cover enters the binder for creasing there can be minimal change as to the spine position. Avoid vertical lines and the use of two different colours at each corner of the spine. For spine text, allow at least a square inch of space top and bottom and ¾" on each side of the type.

Cover Layout For Cerlox/Spiro and Wire Bound Books

The final version of the front and back cover should be in separate pages in one PDF file.

Adding Colour Inserts Into Black & White Book

With black & white books we are able to add colour insert sheets either in a single location of the book or throughout. Save the colour insert(s) as single pages and as a separate file in the final PDF version. We simply insert the pages before the binding process. Printorium charges a nominal fee for colour page insertion.

Naming Your Digital Files

Name your files in a logical fashion for printing. Don’t call it “book”. Stick to names that make sense to people who are not familiar with your files; i.e. ABC_novel_cover and ABC_novel_insides and if there are colour inserts, ABC_novel_colour inserts. If you are sending new or replacement files, rename them with a version 2 or 3 etc., at the end of the file name.

ISBN & Barcodes Instructions

If you are planning to sell your book through commercial outlets, you will need to have the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and a barcode on the back cover. The ISBN is a system of numerical identification for books and other works that assigns a unique thirteen digit number to each published title. Publishers, bookstores and libraries use the ISBN to identify publications in order to expedite their handling, retrieval, ordering, inventory control and accounting.

ISBN’s are provided free of charge through the Canadian ISBN Agency, Library and Archives of Canada. An ISBN number can be obtained on-line at the following website address:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/ciss-ssci/041002-1000-e.html

The ISBN agency requires you to send two copies of your book to the National Library of Canada to ensure its preservation for generations to come. A brief description is then entered into their database and ensures that the existence of the book is made known to the public.

The barcode required for the back cover of your book is called an EAN-13 barcode, and is generated from your ISBN. You can build the price into this barcode if desired. Ask us about generating this barcode for you.

CIP

Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) is a free cooperative venture between publishers and libraries which enables books to be catalogued before they are published. This enables publishers to promote their new books by providing booksellers, wholesalers and librarians with advance information they can use to select and purchase books.

The CIP catalogue record is a brief description of a publication. It includes information such as author, title, series title, subject headings, and ISBN and classification numbers used by book buyers, readers and researchers to identify and locate publications. This record is created and arranged according to internationally established standards which make it possible to distribute information about publications throughout the world. For more information on the Cataloguing in Publication program look at the following link to the National Library of Canada website:

Copyright

If you wish your book to have copyright protection, please contact the Canadian Intellectual Property Office which is an agency of Industry Canada or take a look at the following National Library of Canada link to application for registration of a copyright:
